Everything you need to know about mitochondria

Explore our lecture series on “Everything you need to know about mitochondria” with Professor Mark Tarnopolsky. In this 3-part recording, Mark explains the fundamental role of mitochondria in human physiology, their relationship to exercise performance and VO2 max, how they adapt to endurance training and ageing, and what current science suggests about nutritional or supplemental strategies aimed at supporting mitochondrial function. Designed for practitioners, coaches, students, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of exercise physiology, the series connects core biology with practical implications for health and performance.

What we will cover:
What do mitochondria do, and why are they so important for human physiology?
How are mitochondrial function and VO2 max linked to exercise performance?
How do mitochondria adapt to endurance training and change with ageing?
What role do mitochondria play in common diseases and muscle health?
Can nutritional and supplemental strategies support mitochondrial function?

Professor Mark Tarnopolsky

Professor Mark Tarnopolsky is a neuromuscular and neurometabolic clinician-scientist who received an MD and PhD (Cell Biology and Metabolism) from McMaster University.  He currently holds an endowed chair from McMaster Children’s Hospital Foundation in the area of neuromuscular and neurometabolic genetic disorders and follows over 1500 patients with myopathies, mitochondrial disorders and other neurogenetic disorders. Mark has published over 550 peer reviewed papers focusing on pharmacological, nutraceutical and exercise therapies for neuromuscular and neurometabolic disorders, aging, obesity and other disorders that affect the mitochondria and muscle function. He is also the founder, CEO and CSO of Exerkine Corporation which is a bio-technology/nutraceutical company developing therapies for aging, obesity, muscular dystrophy and mitochondrial disorders.

Mark has been a life-long athlete and represented Canada at the elite level in ski-orienteering, winter triathlon and adventure racing. He has run over 100,000 km, done > 3.5 million push-ups and > 3.5 million crunches in the past 40 years and missed only 7 days of training. In his 20s his VO2 max was recorded in a certified laboratory at over 80 mL/kg/min on 8 occasions with the highest at 86.6 mL/kg/min.  In addition to still competing (now in age group  ) in ski-orienteering and adventure racing he was the head coach of the McMaster XC ski team in 2022-23 and is the Canadian National team coach for ski-orienteering from 2022-current.
