SPORT NUTRITION COURSE

Plant-based diets for athletes

In this course, a panel of experts explore the effects of plant-based diets on athletic performance.

To set the scene for plant-based diets, Asker Jeukendrup outlines the definition of different dietary habits, including vegetarian and vegan diets. Asker then critically discusses some of the claims around plant-based diets, debunking myths that have received attention in the media. Francis Holway then uses his expertise to discuss the effects of plant-based diet for sports performance, calling on scientific evidence, as well as anecdotal examples.

Then, Luc van Loon, an expert researcher in protein metabolism, outlines the impact of plant-based protein sources for skeletal muscle adaptation and performance. Luc outlines key factors that determine muscle remodelling and discusses strategies to maximise the adaptive response with plant-based proteins.

In the final section of this course, Alba Reguant and Nanna Meyer discuss plant-based diets in the context of supporting athletic performance. They highlight challenges that athletes face around achieving their athletic goals while also eating more sustainably.
