The latest on sodium bicarbonate

Explore our lecture series on “The latest on sodium bicarbonate” with Dr Eimear Dolan and Dr Amelia Carr. Across this 3-part recording, the speakers provide an expert overview of sodium bicarbonate as an ergogenic aid, examining which athletes may benefit, how it compares with other buffering strategies, and what the latest science means for its use in different sporting contexts. Drawing on their research expertise, the series helps translate current evidence into practical insight for athletes and practitioners.

What we will cover:
What is sodium bicarbonate, and how does it enhance exercise performance?

Which athletes and sporting scenarios are most likely to benefit from its use?

How does sodium bicarbonate compare with other buffering agents?

What does the latest research say about sodium bicarbonate in different sports?

What practical considerations matter when using sodium bicarbonate?

Dr Eimear Dolan

Dr. Eimear Dolan is currently a Research Fellow at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, supported by the FAPESP/UK Academies Young Investigator Program. Prior to this role, Eimear was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Applied Physiology & Nutrition Research Group at the School of Physical Education and Sport, University of São Paulo.

Eimear holds a PhD in Applied Exercise Physiology from Dublin City University (2010), where her doctoral research focused on the physiological, cognitive, osteogenic, and metabolic impacts of weight regulation in elite jockeys. Her research interests centre around athlete energy availability, bone metabolism, and the use of ergogenic aids to enhance performance, with a particular focus on interventions such as sodium bicarbonate supplementation.

Dr Amelia Carr

Dr Amelia Carr is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Sport Science within the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences (SENS) at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia. The focus of Amelia’s research is the identification and evaluation of nutritional and training interventions for the purpose of enhancing sport performance, particularly in extreme environments, and for female athletes. Amelia’s current research projects focus on buffering agents, environmental physiology and the implementation of research findings within the Australian high-performance sport system. Amelia completed her PhD in sodium bicarbonate supplementation for high-performance athletes at the Australian Institute of Sport and the University of Western Australia.

Amelia is also a Sport Science Advisor for a National Sporting Organisation (Australian Athletics). In this role, Amelia co-leads a national program that develops individual sodium bicarbonate supplementation protocols for elite Australian able-bodied and para-athletes preparing for major international championship events.
